R&B singer Eric Benet is thrilled to be heading to Seoul for his first solo show next weekend.

``I can tell that the Koreans are very anxious to see me perform, so you guys must be feeling my music. It makes me even more excited to come and reciprocate that excitement. What you can expect is a whole lot of positive emotion, a whole lot of feeling good and experiencing Eric Benet at his very best,'' he said, in an e-mail interview with The Korea Times.

Fans quickly snapped up tickets for the concert, which will take place at Yonsei University Auditorium, Dec. 19. Benet is one of most popular R&B musicians among Korean fans because of his soulful vocals and romantic songs: ``You're The Only One," ``Chocolate Legs" and ``Spend My Life with You."

His latest effort, ``Love & Life,'' which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best R&B album, showed Benet's more optimistic side.

``With `Love & Life,' I guess I want to say that life is worthy to be celebrated, to be enjoyed and whenever there is a challenge in your life, keep love and light in your heart and mind, and you will make it through your challenges,'' he said.

It was also the first time in his career that Benet had full creative control over making an album. ``There was no real involvement with the record label at all, just made it and turned it into them. I feel like this album is the purest representation of me because of that,'' he said.

As a singer and songwriter, Benet says he tries to be very honest in conveying real emotions.

``When you hear great artists' music, you can hear the music and feel the pain and the beauty in their life, and when you read the lyrics, you can feel that it all came from a very honest place. And that's how I try to write music too,'' he added.

The album also featured Benet singing with his young daughter India for the first time. Like any proud father, he says India has a beautiful voice and wanted to give her a chance to show it off.

``I thought, `Why not get her to sing a little bit of back up for me?' and that's how it started. Also, India loves to sing and that's what she wants to do with her life in the future, but she understands that she needs to get her education done first,'' he said.

Benet made his debut in the music business with ``True to Myself" in 1996. Before getting a record deal, he worked for years as a singer, earning $50 a week.

``I did it for passion and love of music. I'm from the school of you know … keep practicing what you do and keep working and try to improve your game. Now that I've been in this for about 20 years, working hard and appreciating all my life experiences, I feel that when I perform on stage, my music really comes to life and takes on a whole other dimension,'' he said.

Despite his success, he still has more to accomplish. His to-do list includes: spending more time with his daughter; writing a screenplay and having a chance to work with legendary singer Chaka Khan.

Benet is very enthusiastic about his career right now, saying, ``I'm at the top of my game and I couldn't be happier.''

Eric will perform in New York's Central Park on September 23 as part of a FREE event celebrating the National Park system. It begins at 7pm. Along with the music, there will be clips from Ken Burns upcoming PBS mini-series, "The National Parks: America's Best Idea." The concert will be beamed live to PBS affiliates.

Eric's previously unreleased track "We Gone Ride" will be featured on Najee's new cd, Mind Over Matter, which will be released August 25...

Eric Benét provides some whimsical and suggestive vocals on “We Gone Ride,” a track that balances his distinctive voice with the work of a carefully layered horn section. “When I recorded that song with Eric, he said to me, ‘I had Roy Hargrove do the original horn arrangement.’ Then producer Demonte Posey and saxophonist Mike Parlett (Solar Radio) took Roy’s charts, made some modifications and came up with the arrangement you hear on this track. It’s complex, but it allows plenty of room for everyone in the section – Mike on tenor and alto, John Papenbrook on trumpet and Andrew Lipman on trombone.”

While Americans are racking their brains about how they can get to Washington, D.C., in January for the inauguration, soulster Eric Benet has already received an invite.

"I got a call from my manager and I was screaming, literally," said Benét. "I've been a huge supporter of Obama, from calling radio stations to participating in voting drives, so this is an amazing honor. It's one of those monumental moments like Gettysburg Address and the American Revolution that humanity will look back on 200 years from now and say, ‘America finally woke up!' I feel like one of the guys from the Boston Tea Party throwing the tea overboard. Because of Obama, America is finally gonna be sexy again."

Although Benét can't confirm which ball, the crooner who received two Grammy nods for his latest album, "Love & Life," says he has had no restrictions put upon him and plans to perform three songs. "Whatever I sing it will be appropriate for the occasion," he says.

How I Spent My Day With Eric Benet by Dean

It took the Dean's List a few days to calm down long enough to write about my day with Eric Benet. I think a have recuperated enough to share with you now:

This past Friday, the same day as WDKX's Summer Night of R&B concert, Andre Marcel called me and said, "Are you available tomorrow morning to host Eric Benet for the day?" I think Andre has gotten most of his hearing back after I screamed "YES!" in his ear.

I picked Eric and his A&R rep, PJ up at their hotel bright and early Saturday morning. We chatted about several different things during the short ride to Jim's Too Restaurant. We talked about his performance the night before, he tried to remember his last trip to Rochester and he quizzed me on whether or not I was a "True EB Fan." Needless to say, I aced that test with flying colors.

We arrived at the restaurant and Eric opened and held the door open for PJ and I. Immediately, he began to introduce himself to all of the "Breakfast with Benet" winners who were already seated and all looking lovely. We all ordered our breakfast, which came quickly. Eric was the first one to finish - he had oatmeal and hot tea. He got up and worked the table of about 20 people. He asked everyone if they were alright, if they needed anything, etc. He posed for pictures, signed autographs and gave & received lots of hugs and kisses.

Once breakfast was over, I took Eric to WDKX Radio so he could do an interview with Andre Marcel and Tony Boler on Memory Lane. They talked about many topics - being a single parent of his beautiful daughter India, the importance of education, and the love of good music - some of his favorites include Stevie Wonder and The Sylvers. The Dean's List even got a chance to talk to Eric a bit on the air.

I know my day with Eric had to end eventually, but it pained me to even think about it. I drove Eric and PJ back to the hotel. Of course I got out of the car to get one last hug. And then he was off - on to his next appearance in Buffalo.

Eric may be physically gone, but a part of him remains - his spirit. Some of you might ask, "What's the big deal - he is just a singer?" It was the excitement felt awaiting his arrival, the looks on the women's faces young and old when he showed up at the restaurant, and his sweet, sweet spirit he shared with those of us who were fortunate enough to spend some time with him. "My daughter was under the impression that all celebrities are alike....and Eric totally changed her view on that," said Laurie Hopkins - one of the "Breakfast with Benet" winners who brought her daughter with her.

Eric has the ability to make you feel like its just you and him alone in a room full of people - he makes you feel special. Eric shared one of his songs from his new album with Rochester during his appearance on Memory Lane Saturday - "Chocolate Legs" - Oh, My - get me a fan! Some may only hear the sexual aspect of the song with lyrics like, "I need you to wrap your Chocolate Legs around me" - but it goes a little deeper than that. In a recent interview (see video on www.WDKX.com), Eric explained that the song is really about commitment, giving of yourself totally, supporting each other and most of all, loving each other.

In a time of confusion and despair, our economical situation is horrible, violence is taking over our streets and we are at war in more ways than one, we often focus on everything that is wrong in our lives. Eric took me on a vacation from the madness - away from anything negative. I smiled so much on Saturday that my jaws literally hurt by days end.

Thank you Eric! Thank you for putting a smile on my face. And yes - I am a "True EB Fan!"

It’s interesting because I am a pretty mature man and I have seen quite a few administrations in my life time and I’ve seen a lot of presidential campaigns. I’ve had the opportunity to actually meet senator, future president Obama and it’s interesting because he doesn’t talk like a politician he talks like a visionary. He talks like a person who has a plan for this vision. And for me, it’s no just talk, part of it is from the opportunity that I had to meet him, it’s like this inspirational authentic feeling I got while meeting him. He really, really believes in the best of us, instead of working against the people, he can help us come together as a country. And we are, buried underneath all the bullshit and the rhetoric, a great nation caught up in crazy policies that are all about big business and huge lobbyists and all these interests that have everything to do but what’s best for the people. It’s very easy for a person to loose faith in this country but I haven’t lost faith in this country and one of the things that is so inspiring about Barack Obama it is clearly evident that not only he hasn’t given up on this country but the has a realistic plan which won’t be easy because the person who has been in the white house for the past 8yrs has put us in a position that is embarrassing which is crippling. As a world traveler I completely understand Michelle Obama’s statement about ‘I can’t remember the last time I was proud of this country.’ Because people in other countries are like ‘wow man, you Americans, what are y’all on?’ I think this is man can once again lead this country to be a leader in the world. I am very passionate about Mr. Obama and am most emphatically looking forward to his leadership.

The earth moved! Eric Benet, promoting his new Love & Life CD, showed up at the Manhattan offices of Essence magazine last week, and wowed a roomful of female journalists by launching into an a cappella version of his new song, "Chocolate Legs." At the climatic musical moment when it seemed like Eric had made 20 intimate friends for life, news came of the L.A. earthquake. Eric put an instant stop to the mass swoon, and called his 16-year-old daughter, India, frantically. She was fine. "Oh, Daddy, it was no big deal!" Reassured, Eric returned to seduction mode. The Essence ladies were even more impressed. Sex appeal and the right priorities!

Earlier in the day at East 38th Street's El Rio Grande, I'd had lunch with Eric and his ravishing lady love Manuela Testolini. (She used to be married to Prince!) They make a traffic-stopping couple. I've never enjoyed swifter service at El Rio!

I first met Eric a couple of years ago, in the immediate wake of his highly publicized breakup with Halle Berry. He was singularly concerned about the effect of any negative publicity on his daughter. (India's mother was killed in a car accident.) He spoke well of Miss Berry and still does. I had a strong feeling, on that initial encounter, that there was another side to the Benet/Berry story - his side. But Eric wouldn't go there. Now, that drama is behind him. (And also behind Halle; she's blissful with her new love and baby.)

Eric and Manuela, survivors of high-profile spouses, have great chemistry. She is a businesswoman/ philanthropist and admirably grounded. She and Eric have been together about a year and a half. "I'm in a good place now," Eric said sharing a steamy stare with Manuela. I busied myself with the tostadas. Despite his flashy face and body, Eric's manner is self-deprecating and modest. His only personal trauma of late was teaching his daughter to drive. "Terrifying at first, but now she's so good she can take me to my gigs!"

There's a big Michael Buble/Josh Groban vibe around Eric - he's on the cusp. Audience reaction to him in the flesh is intense. Advance buzz on Love & Life indicates a smash hit.

I asked him what he'd like to do next? "Well, touring for this one, of course. And I want to do an album of R&B classics, a collection of great American pop standards - Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, like that. And I want to do a Christmas album. The problem is," and Benet gave out a big laugh, "I want to do it all in the next three months!"

The second single from "Love & Life" will be "The Hunger!!"

I asked Eric to tell us the meaning of the symbol that is featured on many of his cd covers. He responded, "The symbol is a native american medicine wheel..or spirit wheel..for me it kinda represents an homage to my native american lineage. I also really related to what it symbolized..traveling the four directions of the earth to find your own spiritual path. Some people make huge ones on the ground and meditate or pray. Here's a lil blurb on it..

The Medicine Wheel is representative of American Indian Spirituality. The Medicine Wheel symbolizes the individual journey we each must take to find our own path. Within the Medicine Wheel are The Four Cardinal Directions and the Four Sacred Colors. The Circle represents the Circle of Life and the Center of the Circle, the Eternal Fire. The Eagle, flying toward the East, is a symbol of strength, endurance and vision. East signifies the renewal of life and the rebirth of Cherokee unity."

Eric was a surprise performer at the Lexus Listening Lounge's Pre-Grammy party, which was held February 6 in LA. He serenaded honoree, Cathy Hughes, who is the founder of TV One with "I Wanna Be Loved." Just to give you an update on the new CD...I let the label (various departments at Warner Brothers) hear the new CD last week.All I can say is..I've never received such a positive response from the labels 1st listen to any of my previous CD's...ever!! I cant wait to share this one with y'all !!!! We're tryin to figure out the optimum release date. It wont be long!

TV One is re-airing their holiday special which featured Eric performing "I Really Don't Want Much For Christmas." The show is called "Tis The Season: A Holiday Celebration." Check the calendar for show times.
